How to make Rainbow Tissue Paper Pom Poms

As soon as I saw these pom poms on Craftily Ever After, I was sold. I just envisioned a backyard garland of these and went to work on them. And I mean work – 20 of these took me THREE hours to do. I am still going to teach you How to make Rainbow Tissue Paper Pom Poms, because they’re totally worth the end result.

NOTE: The plain colored ones went faster only because I didn’t have to separate and layer each tissue paper color in a rainbow order for them.

How to make Rainbow Tissue Paper Pom Poms

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Tissue paper
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors

STEP 1

Get out your tissue paper and layer it in the order of your rainbow.

I had 9 colors that I used for these because the more tissue paper sheets you add, the fuller your pom poms (or flowers if prefer to call them that) will be.

STEP 2

Do an accordion (a fan) fold with your tissue paper.

STEP 3

Take your pipe cleaner and wrap it in the middle of the folded paper. Make sure the top twist tie part is is facing up where the red tissue paper is as that will be your top part.

STEP 4

Round out the edges of your tissue paper

STEP 5

Unfold your accordion and begin to gently pull apart your tissue paper sheets and fluff them out.

STEP 6

When you get to the half way colors, turn it over and do the same thing on the other side.

STEP 7

And done!

I also made garland made from flower and star foam shapes. You’ll be able to get about 3-4 strands of garland per package as there is about 3-4 of the same color shape in each.

I sat on my couch while watching TV at night and I took a nice big yarn needle, some white crochet thread and manually sewed these.

You can use yarn or string as well, as the foam sticks great to anything that’s cotton – do not use slippery polyester or a coated thread. They’re so easy to move up and down when you need to adjust the shape positions.

PS – I moved the Rainbow Cake and Rainbow Sugar Cookies posts over to my kitchen site Mad Scullery. There you can find out how to make the cheat version of the insane rainbow cake that is everywhere.

And if I can make those cookies, so can you!

They’re a lot more cost effective than spending $8 on 3 tiny rainbow lanterns from the party supply store too!
