Dear IKEA, what have you done with the LAGAN?

We did a quick trip to IKEA this month, which I would like to say despite all of my IKEA photos on here, is unusual for us

Last year we didn’t go for over half a year and believe me when I say that’s rare coming from someone who used to meet up with friends and our kids for breakfast there. When we moved, we moved pretty far away from our favourite IKEA store (yes we are spoiled rotten having four IKEA’s within reasonable driving distance from our home even though two of those would take well over an hour to get to) so when we go now, there’s usually a purpose because the drive there is a pain in the rear. This time it was to get more shelves and to get the LAGAN wood counter top as part of our half kitchen update that we want to take on this year.

We started off in Kitchens where I immediately noticed their nice new turquoise coloured cabinet doors. The RUBRIK APPLÅD is what they’re called and this crappy iPhone photo does it no justice.

Then I went straight to the counter top samples.

Hmmm. What’s missing in this picture? Perhaps the LAGAN wood counter top that if you do a quick Google search on is just about every DIY homeowner’s dream inexpensive wood counter top to work with for kitchens, bathrooms, desks and other fun crafts.

It was gone.

I checked the computers and it said contact Customer Service. Well IKEA was insanely understaffed that night, so much so that I couldn’t find anyone to cut me some fabric that I wanted to take home. Now before I get onto the rest of the visit, let me jump forward a bit and state that when I got home I emailed them to ask them about the LAGAN’s status.

This is the reply I got:

Thank you for contacting IKEA Canada. After verification, we regret to inform you that the LAGAN countertop has been discontinued since October 2012. Please note that it is no longer available in any of our retail stores or warehouses.

Dear IKEA, why is it gone is my next question? Is it coming back? Is something replacing it? And don’t say the NUMERÄR is still there because it’s twice the price the LAGAN was. The universe obviously does not want us to update our kitchen. If you read this and know the inside scoop, let me know before I start taking money out of our grocery fund to pay for the NUMERÄR.

In Canada the NUMERÄR is currently $199 for the 73 1/4 x 25 5/8″ length. In the United States the same one is $129.00. Told you, almost everything is more expensive here.

So no counter top, no fabric. It was going to be a very short visit.

Oh look a distraction. The NORDEN bench that I have been wanted forever.

Then the Bedroom section really tried to uplift my mood because “it” is finally here in Canada.

By “it”, I mean the FJELL bed frame.

This bed is all kind of gorgeous. I stared at it and tried to avoid looking at its price tag of $499.

I. Love. This. Bed.

Its matching FJELL wardrobe and dresser were there too, still taunting me.

And because apparently inquiring minds wanted to know what the inside of the FJELL wardrobe looks like, here you go.

The wardrobe is $449.00 and the dresser is $249.00. Canadian that is.

On that note, when did IKEA get so expensive?

Is it one of those things that was bound to happen and I should just deal with it because compared to the Restoration Hardware’s of the world, it is still cheaper. Remember you still have to take this home and put it together. Or is it just because the items that I love the most in the store happen to run more than their average Billy bookcase budget.

Again, love that bed. Anyhow…

Walking past the Office section I noticed this. The VIKA FURUSKOG table top. Also temporarily oversold. Is it a conspiracy? Does everyone want a wood counter top?

Onto the Children’s area.

The KALAS tableware got a makeover. So if you have the old line, I tried to warn you in the Rainbow Party post that they weren’t going to be there much longer. It’s probably my fault because I own the other versions. If I own something from IKEA and I show it on here, there’s a high probability it’s going to be discontinued. I’m apologize in advance. It’s a curse.

Then on our way out as we were getting the shelves that we came for, my husband noticed these shiny new aluminum shelves called the EKBY MOSSBY. He still can’t stop thinking about that one and while we wound up getting the white versions, he is contemplating going back for that one (we used two EKBY shelves and made a floating TV stand out of them for our DVD player and PVR).

Oh and did I mention that there’s a good chance the KARLSTAD sectional will be coming over for a permanent visit to our home in the next month? Never mind the fridge, apparently we’ve outgrown our old couch in size. That is by the time we’re all piled up on our little formerly fit perfectly in our condo sectional, there is barely room for one adult and the kids nowadays. Apparently kids get bigger in size. Why wasn’t I warned?

Dear LAGAN, we could have had something great…like better blog photos of my attempts at baking vs my current world’s ugliest kitchen counter top that shows up in all my baking tutorials. We miss you already.

So sorry about the counter top luck! Especially the part aout the price difference btwn Canadian and US IKEA stores. Someone hasn’t gotten the memo that the dollar has been at par for a long time now! I get that there are a few differences that make doing business in Canada different but that price diff is too big.
Hope you get that Karlstad sofa. We have two Karlstad chairs and they are super comfy!

I can’t figure out the why part (with regards to cost). It’s so irritating b/c we’re so close.

It may be showing up next week provided they have in store inventory. Last time I went they were not only staff-less but sold out of everything.

I could definitely use some of those shelves! I need a tiny one to hold my bluray player on the wall in the bedroom. Love that turquoise color in the first picture. I’ve got several paint samples similar to that as I want to paint a little of that color in my workout room. At least I’m “thinking” about it. I love how fresh and modern it looks.

Can’t believe they discontinued that counter. Seems like a best-selling line like that would stay around for a while. Sorry… that sucks!

Love taking these walks with you through Ikea. My husband refuses to step foot in that store so these posts always get me through my jones. I think their stuff is so fun!

Do it Stacey! That colour is one of my all time favourites. I even used it on my wedding invites. It would look so nice against the wood grains and colour scheme in your house. Apparently blue is supposed to disuade you from eating which may make it pretty awesome for a workout room. I could use that in my basement for the days there’s too much snow to go to the gym.

Don’t worry, James HATES going to IKEA almost as much as he hates going to Costco.

What a giant disappointment!! The LAGAN counters are gorgeous… I’m completely stunned that they discontinued them. Hopefully more people will complain and they’ll bring it back. So excited that your sectional is moving in. Can’t wait to hear all about it’s arrival.

There are online rumours that they had trouble with their supplier. I am like get another one and bring it back!!!

We swore we wouldn’t get an IKEA couch. I held off for as long as possible. It’s funny what happens when you have a budget and realize everything that is your style is out of that budget.

can’t wait to see your new sofa, in what colour are you getting it? I would love one of those in my house too. can’t believe they don’t have your countertop anymore, thanks for the tour of IKEA you gave us, I haven’t been since Nov or Dec I think, I don’t even remember my last visit and want to go back but have to hold on on expenses. Love their new bed too, you know it’s true I’ve noticed their prices are higher now, I think it’s because of us, we love IKEA too much and they know we will still buy their cool new stuff ha!ha!

A dark grey. Possibly the SIVIK grey. Something that masks stains better than oh say camel coloured microfiber.

That’s totally why the pricer are higher!!! I like that theory!

Hmmm… those aluminum shelves? I think are exactly what I need. Maybe. I guess I’ll have to go look at them. I’ve been kind of pulled towards open shelving in at least one area of the kitchen… practically, I think it might be a mess, but I think it would do a lot to open up what is kind of a narrow area.

I was thinking stainless… but A- I don’t even know where you get giant stainless shelves. B- they’re no doubt expensive. C- we know what a mess stainless is.

New sofa= awesome. And also, juice/marker/wine magnet.

We used to have tons of dark wood heavy bookshelves in the condo. When we moved we sold them all and said Open Shelving everywhere b/c it fit the light and the style of the room. It is so much easier to sweep let me tell you, when you don’t have stuff crawling under things.

Get the shelf. It was awesome.

I figure with the IKEA slipcovers for the couch, that’s the one good thing about getting a common day one. If they destroy one cushion cover, you can always get a new one. I can just imagine what I would do if they say punctured leather.

Noooo!!! I had LAGAN in mind for my future hypothetical desk! That really sucks about the price difference in Canada. Canadian money is so hilarious they want more of it?

I know right?? I can think of at least a dozen other things they could discontinue in their stores before that item.

HAHAHAH! Apparently our dollar is on par which makes it even more of a dark comedy.

I’m so sorry you missed out on this counter top. We bought it for ~$60 USD last month. I have plans to make a counter height kitchen table with it. I’m so glad I swooped it up before they were out. I hope they come out with a substitute. It really is a great counter at a reasonable price.

That’s a great idea for a project for it and why I think I am floored that it’s not longer available b/c so many people use for various wood projects b/c it’s such a good price point.

I spent a chunk of my morning searching DIY wooden counter tops and now actually think that maybe there’s a good alternative to them.

Boo! That is the worst thing ever cause Ikea is always supposed to have everything in stock and that’s just the way it is supposed to be! Our closest Ikea used to be 1.5 hours away and now there is one less than 15 minutes away! It’s dangerous cause we all know there really is no “popping in.” I hope you find something else you enjoy : ]

It’s true. Dropping by for one item and suddenly you’re leaving with half of marketplace and new wine glasses. Enjoy your short commute! I’d probably apply for a job if my was that close.

Just had to share. Got back from Ikea and the frames I wanted were also (GASP!) discontinued! Ahhhh. All that mulling over frames (which is totally minor compared to counter tops) for nothing. I share your pain!

(Imagine me raising my fist at the sky in aggravation with you.) I constantly live in fear of my favorite items being discontinued (okay, slight exaggeration, but mostly true), so when I find something I love, I buy up a lot of it, and hope it will last me FOR-E-VER. Hopefully, as Bethany said, they get a lot of customer complaints and bring it back.

I was curious to see if there were any on ebay and lo and behold, I found one listing: Not sure if it’s the exact kind you were looking for or if the price is right…but I figured it’d be worth a look!

Your tour through IKEA makes me want to go visit ours. We used to live 1.5 hours from one in Ohio and made an annual trip, but now that we’re in Orlando, we’re super close (like Jennifer’s tale). I hope I never take it for granted!

Lauren you’re so nice to look that up for me! I can imagine the shipping may kill the worth which is why I’d be hesitant.

The great thing about Blogland is that you know if you can build it, someone has already tried it. A quick search for DIY wooden countertop and I’ve already found some seriously great contenders for a possibly project using wooden boards from good old Home Depot. Now I am just trying to convince my husband. That’s the hard part.

FRACK! I was hoping to use LAGAN for our office update to make two new desk and a work table for myself and the hubster. Sigh. Guess I’ll have to realign the budget. Sad face. (I deleted all the expletives I actually used here to keep your rating at “G”) 😉

I really hope they come out with a comparable. I have been reading rumours of them having issues with the supplier of the countertops. IF that is true (which I have no proof of) I hope they find a plan B. It is seriously an amazing counter for the price point.

Yeah, well, after this weekend (we’re putting in a new floor in our half bath downstairs!) I think my budget for the new office is on hold for a few more months. So it gives them a bit more time to figure it out 😉 There is a huge HUGE flea market here in Massachusetts in Brimfield in May that my mom and I are going to (Hey… MA isn’t such a far drive from Toronto! You. Would. DIE!) and I’m hoping I could find some french industrial looking reclaimed work benches or something then. Gotta find a truck…

Hi, I was actually looking for reviews on the FJELL bed frame. We are a newly married couple so trying to furnish our apartment with reasonably priced furniture, and storage solutions, considering we will end up moving. The problem is there is no IKEA here in Syracuse, NY so I have to order from Brooklyn. I saw the FJELL bed online and really liked it, but I couldn’t find any reviews on it. Were you able to look at the bed and see if it looked durable. Its my first time shopping with IKEA so I am a little worried, because I have read reviews of their bad customer service, and shipping issues and mid-beams breaking. It would be of great help since you did look at that bed at IKEA, so I am hoping you can help me decide. 🙂

      Hello Rubina

I am also new to ikea and bought the fjell set, the bed dresser and standing closet. I too much like yourself was woried about quality, for the bad reviews out there for ikea. I drove two hours away to pick it up (I was worried about shipping) and I assembled everything thing in two days.. (i live alone and am single so it took a little longer im sure it would be easier with two people!) And well getting to the point I love it!! I couldnt be more happier. The quality is comparable to solid wood furniture, this set is solid wood for the most part and is holding up well with the two dogs and I. I bought because I loved how it looked and the price of course everything I looked at was two to three times out of my budget. The reviews for this bed are lacking and I dont know why..maybe its to new? I hope this helps. Im in love with the bed good solid quality looks great!!

Things to remember is dont forget the skorva midbeam, the sultan slats and do not assemble the bed on carpet!! Lay playwood or something down. I made this mistake and the bed came out crooked so just when I thought I was done I put one drawer in and I didnt line up. I finally was able to figure out why and well I hope you found this helpful!

You are HILARIOUS! I literally loved this so much. Just stumbled upon this while looking up google images of MY FAVORITE BED ON THE PLANET-Fjell…and well now I’m a fan. You have a wonderful voice in your writing. 🙂 And thank you so much for severely depressing me over countertops I never knew I absolutely can’t live without until now. PLEASE DON’T DISCONTINUE CURSE THE FJELL SET! Hahaha
