Dear Kitchen, How Do I Tell You This…

I am pretty sure our kitchen hates me. Good thing the feeling is mutual.

See, we’re getting a divorce.

It just doesn’t know it yet.

The kitchen is the last room in the house that we haven’t renovated or updated in any way since we moved in. There has been no painting. No new caulking or replacement of the aging counter top. No new back splash since I peeled off the faux brick sticker one left over by the previous owners. This is because in the back of our heads this room doesn’t exist…despite using it everyday due to the necessity of having to make food. The kitchen that exists is the one that’s coming.

Now breaking up with a kitchen you hate isn’t terrible at all. Some days I actually thought eh…it’s not that bad.

The builder grade cabinets with the peeling wood veneer edging. The trim falling off. The yellowing and I mean yellowing formerly white appliances.

And of course the high tech dish washing area.

My dated builder grade kitchen

My dishwashing area

Don’t be jealous now.

That big space that you see above is where a ton of dishes pile up in that little dish rack. What you can’t see is how awesomely the water pools towards the corner walls when you hand wash the dishes, because the builders installed the counter top unevenly. It’s a nice downward slope.

There are so many challenges with this kitchen but that is by far my biggest pet peeve because it makes hand washing dishes a nightmare, as I spend more time cleaning up that area than any other. And this happened a lot because our old dishwasher was tiny and there were always extra dishes to wash.

Well apparently if you build it – or plan on building it – they will come. No baseball field or Kevin Costner needed. Just as we started planning the kitchen renovation I was asked by Frigidaire to be part of their #TestDriveMoms Team and they said “Would you like to test out the Frigidaire Gallery OrbitClean Dishwasher?” and I almost mailed them my house keys.

Have you ever watched How I Met Your Mother where Barney Stinson, champion womanizer, had this theory called The Cheerleader Effect? The idea is that people look more attractive in a group because you don’t notice their flaws until you separate them?

This dishwasher proved that theory to my kitchen.

I am pretty sure that I emailed my friend Kristen the day we installed it and said “I never it realized the kitchen was that bad until I had this gorgeousness in it”.

I mean look at it.

Look at the inside of it.

Stainless steel! No more yellowing impossible to clean walls with stuck on food residue.

And loading extra dishes? What extra dishes?

Everything fits! Because it has so much space. Even for terrible dishwasher loading people like myself. I am admittedly a terrible dishwasher dish loader and it drives my husband crazy.

No matter. It cleans it all anyway.

And it’s like they knew all about me and how much I love wine.

They have these amazing things called Delicate-Care Soft Grips where they hold your fragile dishes so they don’t break.

This feature alone deserves a second photo.

My In Laws came over shortly after we installed it and my Father In Law wanted to see the inside of it. So he opened it up not realizing that it was running a cycle because it is THAT quiet.

If you’ve ever run a dishwasher you know how loud they can be. The kitchen is next to our living room and now there is no more cranking the TV volume while it runs. Honestly I forget it’s on.

And how do you know the cycle is finished? A green light shines from underneath it onto your floor with a beep.

Frigidaire Gallery Dishwasher - Green Light to let you know the cycle is done -

Are you kidding me? Where has this been all my life? I feel like I am catching up with the Jetsons.

And the days of the dishwashing cycle that never ends are over. You can select from a multitude of options. Our favourite by far is the Energy Saver for Daily Use. It’s so quick and efficient and that’s not even the 30 Minute Quick Wash Cycle that it also offers.

Once you decide what cycle is your favourite, you can program it as such and get on with your life.

Game changing would be an understatement.

My husband is like “Alex you’ve already told me you love the dishwasher about 10 times this week.” I know, I know. But come on now. What’s not to love?

Some of the additional great features the Frigidaire Gallery Dishwasher has include:

  • SaharaDry Technology where it gets 95% of Dishes dry the first time. I do recommend using a drying solution jet dry as with it in the dispenser as well.
  • The door doesn’t fall open. Wherever you leave it, it stays there. When you have a tiny kitchen where other doors have to be open at the same time, this is really helpful.
  • It also has Dish Sense Technology where the dishwasher automatically adjusts the cycle time based on how much cleaning your dishes need. That way you’re not wasting any extra time or water. It has done this to me and that blew my mind.
  • It has adjustable dish racks so you can move things around to suit the dishes that you need to put in there.
  • SMUDGE PROOF STAINLESS STEEL EXTERIOR. That deserves an all caps. I have kids. Kids have fingerprints and messy fingers. I used to hate old stainless steel models because all they did was smudge. Not this one. Wipe clean and you’re done. No fancy super expensive stainless steel cleaners needed.

So what does this Frigidaire Test Drive Mom think of it? I think my other appliances are jealous. And the kitchen needs to get renovated faster because this dishwasher is way too sexy for this kitchen.

Wine glass grips is right. I’ve had so many glasses break in the dishwasher so this feature is a gem! XO

I could really use some of those soft grips – I mean that specifically in the dishwasher and in general…

I think your kitchen looks great, but I know what you mean – we have considered getting a backsplash but I suspect that will lead to a whole new kitchen (or fantasies of one…)

LOL!!! I hope the tongue and cheek factor of the post was apparent. I am grateful to have a kitchen in a home period but I spend so much time in that room and aesthetics aside, it’s the most non-functional disaster area. So having a good appliance helps with that giant pool of water mess which leads to so many other headaches.

30 minutes for a whole cycle? My dishwashers fastest cycle is 98 minutes – I kid you not. Also it’s so loud I can hear it two rooms over. Is it bad I almost hope it would break so I could get a new one?

30 minutes!!! Our old one ran for at least 2 hours and sometimes you could practically hear the song “This is the dishwasher that never ends and it goes on and on my friends” hanging out in the back of your mind. No I get that part. The appliances breaking. My stove and fridge are in competition for that right now.

Awesome! Congrats on the new baby! BTW I have the exact same nasty counter tops and they drive me nuts to look at every day. Thanks 1998 but you can have them back.

Oh my gosh this sounds amazing! Mine runs for 2 hours. So loud. I refuse to replace it until we move into a more permanent home – sorry future owners, you’re gonna get a loud and slow dishwasher. Congrats on the new beauty!
