DIY – Leather Bat Necklace

Halloween and me have gotten off to a slow start this year. Why, I am not quite sure. It’s up there with my favorite Holidays of the year and I am still in the middle of fixing up my kids Halloween costumes and loving every second of that. But something has been missing for me this time around. What I do know is that I’ve been focusing more on subtle Halloween crafts, aka this DIY leather bat necklace, versus last years full on Alice in Wonderland front porch decor explosion.

This year I made a fall wreath, and put out some pumpkins and lanterns. And decided to make myself a grown up version of a Halloween necklace. I have to start somewhere. Or else I am going to forgo all this and post a Christmas wreath, and that is just all kinds of wrong because it’s still October.

It’s a very quick and easy craft for anyone to make. If you don’t have leather or prefer to use faux leather, that will work just fine too.

HOW TO MAKE THIS DIY BAT NECKLACE:

  • Stencil (using a pencil) a bat shape on the back of a scrap piece of upholstery leather
  • Cut out the bat.
  • Punch a hole using a leather punch.
  • Added an oval jump ring and chain.

The key to any succeeding with any leather or thick fabric project is to use good scissors. DO NOT use your little paper crafting scissors or your kitchen ones. Keep a set just for fabric and upholstery so that they stay sharp and used for what they are meant for.

Any of the smaller details that you need touched up, you can use a small cosmetic case scissors to tweak things.

No word of a lie, I spent more time trying to hang these bats off of the posed branches so they’d look like they were tossed nonchalantly yet completely perfectly mardi gras style, than I did making the necklace.
