Easy Mother’s Day Cards – a Craft for kids!

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are probably the two major holidays of the year that I can’t make a card better than my kids can. So I am going to show you how your kids can make this Easy Mother’s Day Cards with glitter that you will be finding in your baseboards for the next year.

Easy Mother’s Day Cards – a craft for kids!

Once you have kids, you understand that nothing that you make for your parents, can possibly hold a candle to what their grandchildren can make for them.

You could spend hours making the most utopic handmade card ever. Meanwhile your child will scribble on a piece of paper, seal it with a kiss and whose card do you think will get display rights on the mantle?

Now if you don’t have kids and you’re the kid, then you’re golden.

I’m totally joking. I’m a mom. I get it. Believe me, I have boxes of scribbles and stick figures on papers that I love more than anything.

So every year I try to think of some fun kid friendly card that either they can make or we can work on together.

This year I had this idea that we could do “I Love Mom” cards in the same context as the famous “I love NY” logo and make a heart for it.

photo: Wikipedia

All was going well and I was using the Cooper Black font to make up the cards on my computer. Then my printer/ink cartridge decided to fail and card after card I pulled out had ink bleeding on the paper.

NOTE: Babcia (Bab-chee-ah) FYI is the Polish word for Grandma. That’s what my kids call my Mom. They call my Mother in Law, Grandma.

So onto Plan B.

Which should have been Plan A because kids handwriting always trumps my addiction to typography.

SUPPLIES NEEDED for your Easy Mother’s Day Cards

  • Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter
  • School glue or Mod Podge
  • Paint Brush
  • Red or Pink Glitter
  • Cardstock (the thicker the better to avoid paper warping due to the glue)
  • Pencil or marker

STEP 1

Get your kids to write out “We” and Grandma, Nana or Nona or whatever your family calls the Mom’s in your family.  I had our  my older daughter to write all the cards out first.

STEP 2

Take a cookie cutter and place it in the spot where the I “Heart” you would appear on your card.

Then you take a paint brush and brush plain white craft glue on the inside of the cookie cutter. Mod Podge also works great for this.

I’ve said this before but I swear I use cookie cutters for everything except baking cookies.

STEP 3

Next is the fun part for your kids and torture for you.

GLITTER.

Get your kids to pour the glitter onto the glue covered heart outline. Then shake your card around to ensure the heart was covered and the excess glitter can fall off.

Like watching the sands through the hourglass.

And you’e got yourself some glitter heart Easy Mother’s Day Cards.

And perhaps for your Mother’s Day, your kids can help you clean up all the glitter that you’ll be finding for weeks on the bottom of your socks.

Clearly, your children have the appropriate appreciation for glitter. And understand that more is ALWAYS better.

I made my bf a headband (80’s sweatband-thingy) for her bachelorette party… and wrote on it with glue, and then put glitter on the glue… I didn’t really think it through, because on her wedding, she still had glitter in her hair, and her eyebrows, and her ears… I was like, whoops. Um, sorry??

HAHAHAHAHA! Just for you, this Christmas I promise I will do a set of glittery cards in your honour.

Maybe she could use the glitter under a “something borrowed”?

Cute! Though I must confess that I have a fear of glitter. If I get a card around the holidays with glitter, I’m always the one at work with a few pieces of glitter sticking un-stylish-ly to her face…You are a brave woman to work with the stuff and let your kids work with it without wearing hazmat suits! 🙂

I love, love, love this idea! So easy but so effective. I am making this with my students in class for their Mother’s Day Card. I need to find a smaller cookie cutter. I love how you use cookie cutters for everything but! ~Thea

Oh your students would love this! It’s so easy and the glitter adheres so quickly. If it helps I should mention it was the fine glitter and I picked it up at the Dollar Tree.

Shhh we won’t tell anyone about the baking…

I think I’ll leave this post “accidentally” open…and I love the typography you originally used but I think you’re right, your daughter’s handwriting is the clear winner here 🙂

HA! I do that a lot. Usually with things like Hunter Rain Boots that I keep saying “Groceries for a week. Mommy’s high maintenance rain boots.”

I obviously need to get in touch with my inner glitter girl, because these are so fun! I never use glitter and I’m clearly missing out. Way to come up with a project that your kids can shine at, your moms will love and was creative for you too.

That’s the funny thing, I almost never use glitter. And I don’t know why considering the crazy amount of glitter crafts. Kids love shiny sparkly thing or anything they can make a mess with.

ha!ha! I love glitter but you are right; I still found “Christmas” glitter in my kitchen in March 🙂 You know what I will try this with my son, he loves drawing and I will have him make a card for his grandma’s this year but I think I’m the one who will have more fun than him with glitter! 😉

Alex, I feel like you’d get a kick out of this pin after your card project: http://pinterest.com/pin/273312271108932752/

Doesn’t stop us from using glitter as much as we can, though, does it? #iheartglitter

It’s b/c it’s out of control! It’s funny b/c you know me. I like natural textiles and wood and I rarely use glitter b/c of the clean up madness. Yet it’s becoming unavoidable with my daughter who thinks Mariah Carey got it right with all the bling.
