Easy Valentine’s Day Cookies

I am not a baker. Which is probably not the best pitch for you to make these cookies. Or maybe it is? Because if I can make these easy Valentine’s Day cookies, you should be like I’ve got this. Because you don’t need to decorate them and hello, time saving and still homemade – no icing necessary!

Back in December my friend Jo-Anna who is a Goddess in the kitchen and writes over at A Pretty Life made what were undoubtedly my favorite Christmas cookies of this past seasons baking and craft extravaganza. I mean you need to go see them. I saw them and was like for the hundredth time why is she not my neighbour as I would just invite myself over for dinner all the time. She upon reading this may be relieved that I am not because really now.

Don’t be that neighbour.

Well I showed those Made for Santa Cookies to my kids who were all “Oh my God are we going to make those for Santa?!!” like they were Will Ferrell in Elf and I was someone who could bake and not making false promises, because we never wound up making them. Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies at 9 pm at night on Christmas Eve it was because Mommy “forgot”.

Fast forward to this January we went to Superstore to get some groceries and like the smart merchandising team that they are, the staff at Superstore put out all their Valentine’s stuff right in the store entrance. You know, so that your children could get their product fix before you even stepped past your product fix in Joe Fresh to get the actual food that you came to buy.

And in that section, they found a cookie stamp. It said Made With Love.

Luckily Amazon has it too:

And that’s when they looked at me and said “Hey Mom, isn’t this like the cookie stamp for the cookies that you said we would make for Santa but never did…how come?” Except this time they were more like Peter Dinklage’s character Miles Finch staring at Buddy the Elf across the conference room table. I was Buddy in case you’re not following this rhetoric.

The stamp came home with us. Possibly something else from Joe Fresh too.

And the Easy Valentine’s Day Cookies were made.

See, I can no longer avoid not doing food posts on here. This is because my 4 year old loves to cook and bake. Loves. So we do this a lot more often now. If there is anything I have learned from my Rainbow Cake post it’s that you guys love hearing my food disaster stories.

Don’t believe me? This is the first version of Rainbow Cake when I tried to make it for my daughter’s birthday party.

It even has my first blog name watermark on it and now you may understand why I appreciate any easy Valentine’s Day cookies. You can read about that disaster here.

In which case let me assure you, I had more fun styling these photos than I did baking these cookies (Why is there ribbon there? I don’t know Pinterest tells me that’s what food people do). This is because I strayed from my favourite chocolate brownie cookie recipe from Lila Loa and used another one from a different blogger that shall remain nameless and the dough became a rescue mission. Crumbly dough sucks. After I salvaged them I swore I would never stray from the other recipe again. So if you want to make these in chocolate, use Lila Loa’s recipe.

Or if you’re my 4 year old who hates chocolate (yes my child hates chocolate) who insisted on a vanilla or cinnamon cookie try Martha’s recipe (I’d add more cinnamon but that’s a personal preference).

She made these, all by herself. See? If a kid can make these easy Valentine’s Day cookies, you’re all good to go!

She helped me mix ingredients and then I am talking rolling pin, stamping and cookie cut out master. The only thing she did not do was put them in the oven. I did not bake my first batch of cookies until I was well into my 20’s and I am pretty sure they were from a Pillsbury frozen slice container. There may just be hope yet for a chef in this family.

So thank you Jo-Anna, for inspiring our first Valentine’s cookie post on here.

I still want the Santa cookies by the way.
