Bloggers Favorite Things Exchange

kraft paper with neon hearts gift wrap by my kids -

I’ve often said the medium of blogging has done more for me that I could ever do for it.

I started this blog during a cold miserable winter, the first year we moved to the suburbs after living in downtown Toronto for over a decade. I didn’t know a soul in my then new town and people weren’t exactly outdoors chatting up their new neighbours in the arctic Canadian winter temperatures. Not only that, I gone from working as a television producer and interviewing people in the field as well as doing studio shoots with celebrities, stylists and artists on a daily basis…to staying at home with my kids.

And that is the closest thing I can equal to being grounded as an adult.

Just because the two worlds are so different. Not bad different, just different. It was a big adjustment for me and honestly, quite lonely at times. So one restless day after I was terribly missing a creative outlet to write and produce stories, I decided to open up a free WordPress account, chose a name (that I have since changed) and this little outlet gave me back more in spades than I could have ever imagined.

I’ve gotten the chance to meet people who have since become friends and confidants from all across the world. People I never in a million years would have crossed paths with if it weren’t for our mutual love of decor, writing, DIY, crafts and just the overall medium of blogging. There’s always someone available to talk to somewhere, who in so many ways can relate to everything you’re going through on your side of the computer and vice versa. You read their words and go “I totally get it.” They read your words and say “Thank God it’s not just me.”

Now I haven’t been blogging a quarter as long as the talented bloggers I have read for years but as a long time blog reader, I have noticed how blogging has changed. It’s gone from being a casual community of shared ideas and a simple online journal keeping your family and friends up to date on your home renovations to full on business ventures, Pinterest accounts and brand partnership chaos. And if you’re a blogger have you ever looked at your email signatures? Soon there won’t be enough space for all our social media accounts on one line. I won’t even get into business cards.

And this year for some reason, bloggers started to really feel the differences and impacts of these changes. There were tons of entries from bloggers saying they missed the old days where people connected on a different level. That and somehow they wanted to balance the business and personal sides of their blogs and just slow down the pace. Actually get to know the bloggers behind the 5 second pinned projects and scroll of beautiful photos in their reader feed. Maybe let people back into their lives as well.

So when I got invited to a Blogger Favourite Things Exchange just in time for Mother’s Day this year, I totally jumped at the chance. All participating bloggers each would receive a secret blogger match, get to know them and stalk their blogs and  then send them one or more our favourite things but still something that we know they’d love. And none of us would have a clue who had each other until their/our presents arrived in the mail. It’s like Christmas Secret Santa. Except in May.

Here are all the great bloggers participating…

PS – Am I allowed to write “Favourite” the Canadian way here? I’m kidding. Favorite, favourite – all good. Old school mail is always awesome. And I love making packages and gift wrap. Though I can’t make any promises that my kids won’t hijack the gift wrap part. They seem to be doing that lately. I have no idea where they get this from.

First of all: yes to everything. Second: You just forgot…right over there….my name. You can just pencil it in, no biggie.

I’m so happy to be participating in the exchange with you. It does feel like I’m getting together with old friends, just virtually. FYI, I would be thrilled to get a package wrapped in doodles and stickers land on my doorstep. Pretty snail mail is my favourite kind!
