A review of the Ring Video Doorbell Pro and the Ring Wireless Camera #BestDadBestBuy

If you could get your Dad anything from Best Buy for Father’s Day what would it be? A new gas BBQ? The latest Phone? A wall mounted digital tablet bathroom stand? No really. It exists.  Don’t pretend like you haven’t brought your phone or tablet into the bathroom. I personally suggested a fridge as per my Mother’s Day wish list and my husband looked at me like “Right Alex. And I want an expensive pair of designer name rain boots as well.”

Well played. That being said I won’t talk about his new sneakers.

But I knew the answer to this already as he has been hinting about it for ages now and that is the Ring Pro Video doorbell. When he was first mentioned it a long time ago I was like “Really? A door bell?” But it’s not just any doorbell. It’s a doorbell with an 1080p HD camera where you can see and talk to people through the doorbell via your phone, tablet or computer even when you’re not home. This is not the security camera and intercom of your youth. This is one sexy little box, that you can customize to match your home exterior that has motion detector zones where you can set the parameters.

The first time I got a chance to see the Ring Wireless camera and the Ring Pro Video doorbell in person and what they could do was at the Best Buy Smart Home at the National Home Show. It was there that I also learned about all of the other additional items that come with the Ring including a Ring Solar Panel to charge your Ring camera and the Ring Flood Light Camera. The entire Ring series is one really great family of products.

Needless to say when they arrived at our home, my husband was so thrilled after he installed them that he shared it on his Facebook page and trust me when I say that never happens. We got the Ring Pro for the front of the house and the Ring Stick Up camera for the back. Our garage is in the back and because of this we often walk in through the back of the home, therefore it’s as if we have two official entrances to our home so it was important to cover both angles.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro has some changes from it’s predecessor the first Ring. My husband wanted the Ring Pro because it is wired in (via your doorbell) vs relying on a battery, customized motion zones and a slimmer design. Best Buy has a really great write up about the specific features of the Ring Pro that you can read about in their Best Buy Showcase, which is a very helpful tool for more in depth research about a lot of products you can get at Best Buy.

Fancy specs aside, I think a lot of the time at the end of the day when we look at products for our homes, we ultimately want to hear from a real life experience with it. So what does he (we) think of it?

  • It’s very sensitive to motion. So much so that you probably will wind up changing the settings on the Ring app that you use to operate it (you can set it zero notifications if you want). Otherwise you’re going to get 100’s of notifications every time your kids run in and out during the summer.
  • You can set the ‘zone’ that you want to capture the most motion in. It’s as easy as dragging dots across your screen and you can edit that at anytime.
  • Has a pleasing wind chime notification sound (no really you’ll think you hear fairy dust when you get notified of a motion – again you can change the settings on this).
  • You can program it for very specific notifications during certain hours where you would want to be notified (i.e. the middle of the night).
  • Interchangeable face plates – not everyone has the same home colours and you can choose which ones works best for you.
  • Being able to answer the front door and see who is there AND talk to them when you’re not home is nothing short of pretty darn amazing.
  • After a 30 day free trial of their Cloud recording feature (where all of your videos are stored) for up to 6 months, Ring plans start at $3 per month and they feature as other plans depending on your needs.

This is what your account on your Cloud Recording Service would look like from a computer screen. You can play your files, stop, do screen grabs. It’s super user friendly.

And this is what it looks like from your phone app. The resolution is incredible.

Here is the one thing we learned upon installing the Ring Pro that we didn’t even consider so I hope this helps someone. Our doorbell is currently in the door frame that is set further back from the front of our home.

But we wanted a view of our entire front porch and yard. Because it it set back the video we see is not of the entire space we want to be able to see.  Aka to the right of the brick.

For that (in our case) we would need to mount the Ring on the brick wall to get the best view. It’s not a make or break it issue but in a case like this it would benefit a person to use the first Ring where it is battery operated and you can put that anywhere without any limitations, otherwise known as where your current wired in doorbell is located.

So take note of this when you’re debating between the Ring (battery operated) and the Ring Pro (wired in). In the meantime we’ll be building a frame for it to be flush with the front brick wall that you can see in the photo as neither of us has any desire to drill through brick to fit a doorbell on there. And he really wants the wired in version because batteries can finicky.

The Ring Pro is part of a really great list of Tech Gifts for Father’s Day that you can find on Best Buy’s site. I am staring at that Logitech Remote Control which would be able to eliminate the whopping 5 remote controls currently on our coffee table. And have you seen this new updated Polaroid camera?!! But really though, that BBQ. Ok there I go again with the appliances.

Do you want to know one of the biggest reasons my husband wanted a Ring Pro? And this is very fitting for Father’s Day. It’s peace of mind for him for his family. He works shift work and the hours can be erratic. The ability to ensure your family is okay when they’re asleep and you’re awake is something that is invaluable. As well, there will come a point soon where our kids will be old enough to stay at home by themselves. Imagine no longer having to wonder if your child got home from school safely if you’re in the middle of a meeting or can call a neighbour if you suspect something isn’t right. Because really, nothing is more important to my husband than his family. So yes dear, your doorbell is a really great idea for a Father’s Day gift.
